What Is SOC 2?

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) created internal control reports, the System and Organization Controls (SOC), for service organizations.
Their main purpose is to enable end users to assess the risk associated with outsourcing a service.
The SOC 2 report evaluates a service organization’s information systems based on the below criteria:
- Availability;
- Confidentiality;
- Privacy;
- Processing Integrity;
- Security.
The auditor then renders an opinion in an SOC 2 report, which:
- Describes the organization’s systems;
- Assesses the fairness of its controls;
- Evaluates the appropriateness of the controls’ design;
- Specifies which controls were in operation on the mentioned date;
- Describes if the organization was effectively operating these controls during a specific time period.
